AL-ÁNDALUS

AL-ÁNDALUS

01-09 October 2022

TRIP OVERVIEW

Andalusia, the land of great civilisations. Frontier of many wars. Cradle of cultures that have changed the history of the world. Al-Ándalus, or Land of Venús in Arabic, remains a fascinating territory where a bicycle trip quickly becomes an adventure. It’s where deserts meet high mountains and fertile valleys, large cities and small towns stay rooted in the land and history—where the hospitality of its people, the diversity of its cuisine and the infinite number of historical buildings make our journey an unforgettable and always-surprising experience.

Before we start cycling, we will enjoy a day in Granada, visiting the magical gardens of the Alhambra.

We will set out from the beautiful city of Granada, where the Alhambra is located, crossing two deserts: the Gorafe and Tabernas, with the final two stops by the beautiful Mediterranean Sea!

The Gorafe desert is a natural paradise that is still almost unknown, with an intricate network of ravines through its famous ‘calanques’ and surprisingly abundant fauna and flora.

The Tabernas Desert is famous for being the ultimate setting for most of Western films of the last century. Practically all productions of the so-called “Spaghetti Westerns” were filmed here.

Finally, we will cross the Sierra Nevada, Baza and the Sierra Alhamilla to reach the coast and cycle through the paradisiacal Cabo de Gata to finish in the seaside city of Almería.

It is a journey of great contrasts that crosses an area that helped birth a historic union between differing peoples and cultures.

During each stage, we will carry on the bike what we need for the day: some clothes, spares, a few snacks… the rest (our travel suitcase) will be waiting for us when we arrive at our destination.

Throughout our adventure, we will sleep in big and modern hotels, in small hostels by the sea, in a comfortable rural house and even in an incredible cave-house.

THE TRACK

THE STAGES

Stage 01. Granada–Gorafe – 94 km | 1700 m

The longest and hardest stage will be on the first day. We will start by “climbing” the beautiful city of Granada until we reach the Llano de la Perdíz, above the Alhambra. From there we will move away from the city to the landscapes of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Through tracks and small roads, we will reach our first destination: Gorafe.

Stage 02. Gorafe Loop – 67 km | 1300 m

This is probably the most incredible stage of the trip: a tour of the Gorafe desert that will not leave you indifferent. Ravines, caves and endless landscapes. We will return to the village of Gorafe for dinner and rest.

Stage 03. Gorafe-Gérgal – 84 km | 1100 m

The transition stage between deserts. We will travel at full speed along the ramblas and tracks between huge wind turbines to completely change the landscape and reach the gates of the Tabernas Desert. We will sleep in Gérgal.

Stage 04. Gérgal-Níjar – 75 km | 1500 m

The “second queen stage” of the trip will leave us speechless. We will start by crossing the incredible Tabernas Desert and, after regaining our strength, we will attack the Sierra de Alhamilla mountain pass and then descend to the village of Nijar. Three absolutely different landscapes in a single day’s journey.

Stage 05. Níjar-Isleta del Moro – 45 km | 450 m

We will leave Nijar and approach the coast, passing through greenhouses to get to know the old mining area of Cabo de Gata, where the famous gold was extracted. Tracks and paths will take us to the small village of Isleta del Moro, where we will rest on the beach, enjoying the fresh fish and the sea breeze.

Stage 06. Isleta del Moro-Almería – 60 km | 600 m

On our last stage, we will skirt the spectacular Cabo de Gata to leave the beaches and enter the city again, after six days of travelling through the least populated part of this territory. It will be a day of tracks, sands, flamingos and beaches.

Me ha gustado mucho. Paisajes espectaculares, bien organizado y buena gente.

BOOK NOW

28 August – 04 September 2022

TRIP OVERVIEW

There is a region of Spain so dramatic and striking, its lands could easily be mistaken for those of the iconic, majestic US National Parks. Yet unlike the natural American wonders, these Spanish landscapes, surrounded by the earth-tone hues of the Montes Universales all the way south to the source of the emerald-green Tajo River, can be easily reached without having to take an intercontinental flight. As a matter of fact, getting there only takes an hour and a half from Italy.

In addition to the medieval history, evident in the 12th century castles of Zafra (as seen in Game of Thrones) and Peracense, there’s the incomparably amazing Spanish cuisine—all overlooked by the village of Albarracín, considered a national monument, winner of a Gold Medal of Merit for Fine Arts and a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage status.

We discovered all this thanks to the genius of Ernesto Pastor, creator and founder of the Montañas Vacías bikepacking route. Anyone who meets Ernesto soon knows that his philosophy towards adventure is truly superlative, almost heroic, as he invites everyone to visit these lands and experience something great, in whatever form suits them best.

With Ernesto’s blessing, we want to propose an adventure along part of his 700 km route: an unbeatable bikepacking experience with a knowledgeable guide, good food and a fine roof over your head every night.

Of course, for this expedition to be truly successful, it is absolutely necessary to create a strong team spirit amongst all our travelers. No rider will ever be left alone or find themselves individually facing difficulty for any reason. It will be the responsibility not only of the guides, but also of the individual participants to help problem solve throughout the duration of the trip, working together to make the most of our adventure as a team. It will be an unforgettable experience and journey, but also a unique opportunity to educate ourselves on group consciousness and the ability to share—be it joy, fatigue, planning, organization, coordination, defeat or success.

And in this case, success will not be defined as arriving at the final destination but having set off and having done our best to arrive all together.

THE STAGES

STAGE 01 – Teruel – Albarracín – 54 km | 1200 m

Our journey begins in Teruel and our first destination is the village of Albarracín, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and a National Monument. The Montes Universales surround us with their well-maintained forest tracks.

STAGE 02 – Albarracín – Griegos – 67 km | 1900 m

From Albarracín, we start the day with a very demanding climb, despite being only two kilometers long. But don’t worry, the view will be worth the effort. Today we cross some of the densest pine forests in Europe in a continuous up and down until we reach Griegos, where we will spend the night.

STAGE 03 – Griegos – Peralejos de las Truchas (Bruce Springsteen’s hometown) – 79,5 km | 1960 m

We start the day cycling through the Dehesas de Griegos to the source of the Tajo River, a quiet start that will take us through lonely forests and beautiful villages to our destination.

Editor’s note: Peralejo de las Truchas has an adopted son by the name of Bruce Springsteen. We will tell you the story.

STAGE 04 – Peralejos de las Truchas – Molina de Aragon – 79,8 km | 2.350 m

We leave Peralejos de las Truchas through its jagged mountains under the watchful eye of local vultures. We continue along the emerald-green Tajo River, which on more than one occasion allows us to take a refreshing dip. This whole stage is extraordinarily beautiful. In the late afternoon, we reach Molina de Aragón, where our hotel and a fresh cervecita await us.

ETAPA 05 – Molina de Aragón – Zafra Castle and Peracense Castle – 66,1 km | 1070 m

We begin the penultimate stage and leave the Tajo to throw ourselves into medieval history, linking two important castles: Zafra and Perasence. Then, our route will wind through the typical Castilian landscape, warmed by the summer sun. After visiting the second stronghold at Perasence, a beautiful descent will take us back to our hotel.

STAGE 06 – Peracense Castle – Teruel – 65 km | 650 m

One last quiet day between ruins, plateaus and a few villages links Peracense with Teruel—a stage dedicated to savoring the last treasures of the rich and welcoming region of Aragon. We will do everything we can to inspire your love and appreciation of the amazing Montañas Vacías, born of the brilliant mind and pure spirit of our dear Ernesto Pastor; this stage was specifically designed by him for us.

Once we arrive at the hotel in Teruel:

We will pack up our bikes and enjoy a free day, followed by a goodbye dinner and night at the hotel. The next day, after breakfast, our services end. Transfers to the various airports are not included but we are happy to help arrange them.

Altopiano – Monfumo – 88 km – 1200 m

Cycling through endless forests we go downhill to the tine walled village of Marostica, then to Bassano for a Grappa tasting at Palladio’s famous wooden bridge, also along little villages and singletracks and then to Monofumo, for a glorious rest at the agriturismo.

Day 04 – STAGE 03

Monfumo – Quinto di Treviso – 88 km – 750 m

From the sculptures of Canova preserved in Possagno, we head east to cross the River Piave, sacred to the homeland for the sacrifice of Italian soldiers during the First World War, and enter the Prosecco wine region.

Wine tasting at a prestigious cellar and then climb Montello’s white and dusty roads, up to the elegance of Badoere where we will rest and enjoy an aperitif. The sources of the River Sile will show us the way to the end of the stage, at a century-old inn in Quinto di Treviso.

Once in the saddle again, we will cycle with the sea and the beach on our left, and the lagoon, fisherman villages and taverns on our right.

Landing in Chioggia will not be the end of the tour, but the beginning of a new amazing enogastronomic experience.

MOROCCO: FROM THE ATLAS TO THE DESERT

FROM THE DOLOMITES TO VENICE – GRAVEL EXPERIENCE

BOOK NOW

24-30 April 2022 | 23-29 October 2022

OVERVIEW

Exotic and near at the same time. Normally, if you want to embark in an exotic trip with a different culture, 10 hour planes are usually involved. Not in Morocco. Take a plane anywhere in Europe, and in 2 or 3 hours you will be in Marrakech, ready to head down to the desert where a completely 19th century lifestyle still exists. Sandy  (but rideable) gravel roads, clay huts and smiling kids awaits for you on every small village, and for some unforgettable days you will be riding in a different world…

And there’s no better way to see Morocco than by bicycle!

We´ll arrive at Marrakech, were we will visit the famous square of Yamma el Fna, the Zoco… and enjoy our stay in a impressive riad.

Our journey will start by making a transfer to the top of the Atlas: the Tizi n Tichka pass. From there, we´ll test our bicycles riding to the Ait Ben Hadou Kasbah, an incredible place many time used as the scene of popular movies…

And there is where the true adventure begins. We´ll cross the Anti-Atlas, one of the least visited places in Morocco: a desolate world of rocky outcrops and lunar landscapes where the contrasts are extreme. We´ll arrive to the small village of N´Kob, where we´ll enjoy a well-deserved rest.

The second stage will take us from N´Kob to Tazzarine through perfect gravel paths.

And our last stage will carry us to the beginning of the desert at Zagora. That night we´ll sleep under the stars in a real Berber Camp, close to the sand dunes in some confortable bereber tents.

We will return to Marrakech, were we will enjoy the last night back in the riad and a wonderfull dinner in an special moroccan restaurant.

During our three days on the bikes, we will only see a few cars, we´ll enjoy the quite desert riding through some nice surface roads and amazing dirt tracks and we´ll be delighted with delicious food and accommodation.

You can also rent a gravel bike or e-bike with us and it will be waiting for you at the beginning of the trip, so you can travel light and without worrying about the bike transportation.
