Trip Overview

A mountain bike journey through history and remembrance

Five days among stone, wind, and silence.
Five days in which the mountains are not just a landscape, but guardians of ancient stories, of courage and sacrifice.

The journey begins across high pastures scented with fresh hay, where the malghe still tell the age-old rhythm of transhumance. Here, for centuries, people have lived in dialogue with the mountains, turning grass into milk, milk into cheese, and silence into culture. The Altopiano welcomes the rider with its simple hospitality and the slow, steady breath of nature.

Then memory becomes tangible. At the Sacrario di Asiago, thousands of names carved in stone whisper stories of youth taken too soon, of men and women who gave everything. Forte Lisser watches over the valleys like a sentinel from an age of iron, and the heart bows before a silence dense with courage and pain.

The climb toward Cima Portule is an ascent into the very heart of the front line. The Strade della Guerra open windows onto history among switchbacks and trenches, while at Bivio Italia the air still carries the echo of decisions that shaped collective destinies. This is a ride that becomes a pilgrimage, a meeting point between majestic nature and the fragile resilience of humankind.

Monte Verena and Forte Campolongo rise as silent witnesses to a time that must never be forgotten. The air seems to carry the distant sound of the cannon that opened the hostilities. Rock and stone speak of battles, resistance, and everyday heroism. Here, the wind carries the memory of soldiers who faced fear with the strength of their spirit, and every trace of war becomes a lesson in respect and remembrance.

The journey reaches its climax on Monte Cengio, where the Salto dei Granatieri carves the greatness of sacrifice deep into the heart. Men who chose devotion to their homeland, facing the abyss with immortal courage. Here, where the mountain becomes a sanctuary, silence is not emptiness, but an echo of memory and gratitude.

Five days in the saddle, along trails and sweeping views, between history and nature, leave the heart full and the mind at peace. At the end of the journey, every climb, every descent, and every shared silence becomes a thread linking past and present, memory and freedom. On the Altopiano di Asiago, riding is more than sport: it is a way to feel history, breathe the mountains, and carry a piece of that magic with you forever.

THE STAGES

27 June

Arrival at the Col del Sole hotel. We settle into our rooms, prepare our bicycles, meet to go over the details of the trip and get to know each other a little better, and enjoy the first of the spectacular dinners on the trip.

28 June – STAGE 01

Tour Loop Malghe e Cimiteri Inglesi Domenica — 48 km | 1130 m

A circular route immersed in the tranquillity of green pastures and framed by mountain landscapes, the Asiago Plateau reveals itself through its mountain huts—authentic witnesses to a rural life deeply rooted in the land. These huts are not merely shelters, but intrinsic elements of the plateau’s morphology, scattered across an ideal territory for lovers of mountain photography and wide, open horizons.

As the route follows the very edge of the plateau, sweeping aerial views unfold in constant succession: hills, ridges, and peaks appear and dissolve as you ride, suspended between the deep abysses of Val d’Assa and the pale silhouettes of the Dolomites. The journey moves between the imposing bastions of Monte Cengio and the distant plains below, tracing a landscape shaped equally by geology, history, and light.

The tour embraces the plateau in its entirety, linking mountain huts and green meadows with the forests of Barenthal, the rolling pastures of Asiago, and the beautiful cycle path created along the route of the former rack railway. This historic line, with its tunnels carved directly into the rock, adds a final layer of character to a ride where nature, history, and movement are inseparably intertwined.

29 June – STAGE 02

Tour Strada del Vecchio Trenino- Monte Rasta –Val di Nos- Campomulo — 50 km | 1370 m

We will ride along the Strada del Vecchio Trenino, following tunnels carved directly into the rock until we reach the heart of Asiago and its Military Memorial. From there, we will climb Monte Rasta to enjoy sweeping views across the vast expanse of the Asiago Plateau before continuing towards the Piana di Marcesina, a jewel set among the peaks of the Venetian Prealps, enchanting visitors with its timeless natural beauty.

This wide, open landscape is an invitation to explore breathtaking panoramas, lush meadows, and a serene atmosphere that seems to slow time itself. Riding across Marcesina feels like entering a suspended world, where space opens up and silence becomes part of the journey, allowing the landscape to speak with clarity and calm.

Our route then leads us to Forte Lisser, a First World War military fortification built by the Austro-Hungarian army in a commanding and panoramic position. Today, it stands as a site of great historical and landscape value, immersed in nature and offering evocative views over the Plateau of the Seven Communities. With its deep ties to the Great War and its untouched tranquillity, the Piana di Marcesina remains a perfect refuge for those seeking a profound connection with nature and rare moments of quiet far from the pace of modern life.

30 June – STAGE 03

Tour La Piana di Marcesina –Bocchetta Portule e Cima Larici –Val di Nos- Campomulo — 47,4 km | 1470 m

Marcesina is a vast natural plateau stretching between Veneto and Trentino, renowned for its open pastures, dense forests, and expansive horizons. Untouched and deeply atmospheric, it is an ideal place for riding, nature, and silence, often referred to as the “Canada of Italy” for its wide spaces and northern feel. Here, the landscape opens generously, inviting a slower rhythm and a deeper connection with the surroundings.

We will reach the Aquila di Vaia, a monumental wooden sculpture set in Marcesina and crafted from trees felled by the devastating Vaia storm. A powerful symbol of rebirth and the strength of nature, it stands as a reminder of resilience, respect for the environment, and the ability of landscapes to regenerate after destruction.

From here, the route climbs steadily toward Bocchetta Portule, the highest point of our tour. During the First World War, this pass played a crucial strategic role as a supply and transit line, marked by military movements and fortifications. Today, it has become a place of symbolic convergence, where history and wilderness meet, highly valued by hikers and cyclists alike for its beauty, its memory, and the sense of perspective it offers at the roof of the plateau.

01 July – STAGE 04

Tour Larici – Lago di Lavarone — 56,2 km | 1310 m

From Cima Larici, at 1,800 metres above sea level, and after an excellent breakfast at the mountain refuge, we will begin our descent towards Lake Lavarone. The route winds through the evocative Larici area, riding between traditional malghe in an itinerary fully immersed in the natural landscapes of the plateau. Bright forests and quiet clearings accompany us along silent gravel roads, creating an authentic mountain atmosphere where rhythm slows and senses sharpen.

We will then ride across the Dosso del Monaco, a panoramic hill set among the forests of the Alpe Cimbra, known for both its natural beauty and historical significance. The area preserves traces of the First World War and today offers a peaceful setting for unhurried riding, shaded trails, and wide views over the surrounding plateau.

The day concludes at Lake Lavarone, where we will arrive in time to enjoy the soft light of sunset. An aperitivo by the lakeshore provides the perfect closing moment, as reflections dance on the water and the mountains settle into evening silence.

02 July – STAGE 05

Tour Luserna – Campolongo – Lago Spillek – Col del Sole — 51,6 km | 1510 m

We will pass through Luserna, a distinctive alpine village known for its Cimbrian culture, deep-rooted traditions, and wide-open views across the plateau. From here, we climb to reach the Drago di Vaia, a striking wooden sculpture created from trees felled by the Vaia storm. Powerful and symbolic, it embodies rebirth, resilience, and a profound bond with the mountain landscape.

Our route then leads to Forte Belvedere, a historic Austro-Hungarian fortification from the First World War. Built in a dominant strategic position, it once controlled vast stretches of the surrounding territory. Today, fully visitable and immersed in nature, it offers evocative panoramic views over the plateau and the encircling mountains, where history and landscape converge.

We return by riding through the open pastures and white gravel roads of the Campolongo area. Wide green spaces unfold in the quiet of the plateau, surrounded by spruce forests and uninterrupted nature, before we roll back to the welcoming Col del Sole Bike Hotel, closing the loop in the calm rhythm of the mountains.
