Imagine pedaling through Japan’s last frontier, where vast open landscapes stretch endlessly, misty mountains rise in the distance, and coastal roads carve through dramatic cliffs. This is Hokkaido—raw, untamed, and made for adventure.

This summer, we invite you to embark on a true test of endurance and spirit: a 9-stage bikepacking expedition from Wakkanai to Sapporo. Over 733 km and 6,800 meters of climbing, we’ll traverse Japan’s northernmost island, from windswept coastlines to lush alpine forests. Every day will be a new challenge, a new landscape, and a new reason to fall in love with the wild beauty of Hokkaido.

You’ll carry everything you need, sleep under the stars in remote campsites, and ride through places few travelers ever see. No fixed schedules, no crowded tourist spots—just you, your bike, and the rhythm of the open road.

Cancellation policy

Refund and cancellation

Where, for whatever reason, one person is obliged to withdraw, the person must give written notice to Project Adventure Cycling.

Refund will be calculated with this penalty:

– In case of cancellation, an administrative fee of €300 will be charged.
– 30% of the total trip cost for cancellations up to 45 days before departure
– 40% of the total trip cost up to 30 days before departure
– 50% of the total trip cost up to 21 days before departure
– 75% of the total trip cost up to 14 days before departure
– After this date no refund will be given.

There will be no refunds for those who do not show up at the start of the trip or withdraw during the course of the tour.
There will be no refunds for those who are unable to start or complete the tour due to a lack or inaccuracy of personal travel documents (i.e Visa or Passport).

The traveller understands that some destinations pose more of a risk than other destinations due to weather conditions, socio-political situations and the geography of the region. The traveller acknowledges that factors such as, but not limited to, weather conditions, landslides, floods, flight cancellations or delays, strikes, labour issues, power failures, restrictive governmental laws or regulations, riots, insurrection, war or other (hereinafter called “Force Majeure Event”) are not the fault of Project Adventure Cycling and may hinder, delay or even prevent the Traveller’s ability to make or complete the trip. The traveller acknowledges that the Project Adventure Cycling shall not be liable to the traveller for any delay or cancellation of the trip due to a Force Majeure Event. The traveler is neither entitled to a refund nor any other payment for damages from the Project Adventure Cycling in the event that the trip is cancelled or delayed due to a Force Majeure Event. Please note that we are never responsible for any airfare ticket expenses.

9 August

Arrival in Wakkanai – The Beginning of Our Hokkaido Adventure

Welcome to Wakkanai, the northernmost city of Japan and the starting point of our incredible journey through Hokkaido!

After a scenic internal flight from Tokyo Haneda Airport, we touch down at Wakkanai Airport, a small but charming gateway to this remote and picturesque region. As we step off the plane, we are immediately greeted by the fresh, crisp northern air and the sense of adventure ahead.

Awaiting us at the airport is our private van, ready to transfer us comfortably to our first hotel. During the drive, we’ll get our first glimpses of Wakkanai, a town known for its rugged coastline, rich maritime culture, and stunning views of the Sea of Japan.

Once we arrive and settle into our accommodations, it’s time to fully unwind and immerse ourselves in Japan’s renowned hospitality. Our evening begins with a visit to a relaxing onsen (hot spring), where we can soak away any travel fatigue and prepare our bodies for the adventure ahead. The warm, mineral-rich waters will help us fully decompress, setting the perfect tone for the days to come.

After our rejuvenating onsen experience, we will enjoy our first group dinner, featuring a delicious Japanese-style meal with fresh, local ingredients—perhaps including some of Hokkaido’s famous seafood. This will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know our fellow travelers, share excitement for the upcoming journey, and toast to the adventure ahead.

The next morning, we will wake up to a hearty and authentic Japanese-style breakfast.

10 August

Free Day in Wakkanai: Bike Assembly, Scenic Ride, and Cultural Exploration

Enjoy a leisurely day in the northernmost town of Japan, Wakkanai, as we take time to assemble our bikes and prepare for the adventure ahead. Once our bicycles are ready, we’ll set off for Cape Noshappu, a stunning coastal point known for its panoramic views of the Sea of Japan and, on clear days, a glimpse of the distant Sakhalin Island. This ride will not only serve as a scenic introduction to the area but also as an opportunity to test our bikes and capture some memorable photos against the backdrop of the lighthouse and rugged coastline.

After soaking in the views, we’ll cycle back into town to explore Wakkanai’s bustling fish market and harbor, where we can witness the daily activities of local fishermen and perhaps catch a glimpse of the region’s famed fresh seafood. From there, we’ll make a special visit to a local temple to receive a traditional blessing for our journey, adding a meaningful cultural touch to our adventure.

As the day winds down, we’ll return to the hotel to enjoy a well-deserved dinner, reflecting on the day’s experiences and preparing for the journey ahead.

11 August – STAGE 01

Wakkanai to Kutcharo Lakeside Campsite – 105 km | 480 m

The Journey Begins – Cycling to Kutcharo Lakeside

Today marks the official start of our incredible cycling adventure! After enjoying a hearty Japanese-style breakfast, we set off on our first day of riding, with the ocean as our constant companion on the left, offering breathtaking views as we pedal along the coastline.

Our first major stop will be Cape Soya, the northernmost point of Japan, where we can take in the vast expanse of the Arctic Ocean stretching toward the horizon. This iconic location features a monument marking Japan’s northernmost tip, making for a perfect photo opportunity and a chance to pick up souvenirs to commemorate the beginning of our journey.

Just a short ride from Cape Soya, we visit the Soya Peace Park, home to Japan’s famous wild deer. Here, we can take a moment to appreciate the peaceful surroundings, observe the deer grazing nearby, and reflect on the symbolic significance of this site dedicated to peace and remembrance.

We then continue our journey southward, following the coastal road as it winds through the serene landscapes of northern Hokkaido. The route offers stunning sea views, fresh ocean air, and glimpses of the region’s quiet fishing villages.

As we approach the village of Sarufutsu, we have two options for lunch, depending on our timing:

•Option 1: A quick stop at a local supermarket, where we can grab something simple to eat on the go.

•Option 2: A more leisurely stop at a local seafood restaurant at the 77 km mark, where we can savor some of Hokkaido’s freshest seafood dishes, such as scallops and crab, which this region is famous for.

After lunch, we tackle the final 17 km stretch to our overnight destination: Kutcharo Lakeside Campsite. This beautiful lakeside campsite is nestled in a tranquil natural setting, offering a perfect place to relax after our first day on the road. With the peaceful waters of Lake Kutcharo nearby, we can unwind, enjoy the crisp evening air, and reflect on the first stage of our adventure.

Tonight, we embrace the simplicity of outdoor life, enjoying a restful night under the stars, preparing ourselves for the exciting days ahead!

12 August – STAGE 02

Kutcharo Lakeside Campsite to Horonobe – 60 km | 400 m

The Journey Begins – Crossing Hokkaido by Bike

The second day of our adventure kicks off on an exciting note as we pack up our gear and set off for the much-anticipated crossing of Hokkaido. This leg of the journey begins with a gradual uphill ride, as we cut across the island, immersing ourselves in the pristine landscapes of northern Japan.

As we traverse this wild and remote region, it will be essential to stay together and maintain a bit of noise, as the area is home to abundant wildlife, including deer and possibly even foxes. This 57 km stage is relatively short but filled with breathtaking scenery—rolling pastures, lush greenery, and vast open spaces that define Hokkaido’s untouched beauty.

At kilometer 54, we will take a well-deserved break at a unique educational farm, where we’ll enjoy a refreshing and nourishing lunch stop in a setting that showcases the region’s deep connection to agriculture and nature.

From there, it’s just a short 3 km ride to our final destination for the day: a serene park in the town of Horonobe, where we will set up our tents for a night under the stars. To cap off the day in the most relaxing way possible, we’ll head to a nearby onsen (hot spring) in a neighboring village, where we can soak in the soothing thermal waters, easing our muscles after the ride and preparing for the next leg of our journey.

13 August – STAGE 03

Horonobe to Haboro – 91 km | 400 m

Coastal Adventure & Traditional Hospitality

As our third day begins, we gradually increase our daily distances, pushing further into the heart of Hokkaido’s coastal landscapes. Today’s route takes us along the eastern coast of the island, where we’ll experience a noticeable shift in scenery. Unlike the tranquil and remote pastures of the previous days, this stretch brings us closer to more bustling and lively surroundings—small fishing villages, glimpses of local life, and stretches of rugged coastline that provide a fascinating contrast to our earlier rides. But despite the livelier atmosphere, the breathtaking views of the sea and sky will continue to inspire us along the way.

Midway through our journey, we’ll pause for a well-earned lunch stop at a traditional Showa-era restaurant—a nostalgic eatery that captures the essence of Japan’s post-war period with its retro ambiance and hearty, home-style cuisine. This will be a chance to enjoy authentic local flavors while soaking in the charm of a bygone era.

After covering 40 km from our starting point, we will arrive at our destination for the night: Haboro, a charming coastal town where we will check into our first Ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. Here, we’ll get to experience the warm hospitality and timeless traditions of Japanese lodging, complete with tatami-matted rooms, futon bedding, and possibly a soothing onsen to unwind after the day’s ride. This marks an exciting milestone in our journey, combining adventure with an authentic cultural experience.

14 August – STAGE 04

Haboro to Grass Campsite – 113 km | 1000 m

A Challenging Ride with an Oceanfront Reward

The fourth day of our journey unfolds with an ambitious stage—a 113 km ride that will test our endurance and focus. Today’s route takes us along a busy road, so extra caution will be needed, especially when navigating several tunnel crossings. Visibility and awareness will be key as we ride through these sections, ensuring we stay together and safe throughout the journey.

Despite the challenging terrain, the day promises to be incredibly rewarding. We will make several scheduled stops along the way to regroup, rest, and refuel, allowing us to pace ourselves comfortably. There will also be opportunities to stop for lunch, giving us a chance to recharge with some local cuisine before tackling the final stretch.

The true highlight of the day awaits us at our camping site—a spectacular grass-covered site perched right on the oceanfront. After a long and demanding ride, this breathtaking coastal setting will be the perfect place to unwind, breathe in the fresh sea air, and take in the stunning sunset over the waves. The sound of the ocean will be our backdrop for the night, providing a well-earned moment of tranquility as we prepare for the days ahead.

15 August – STAGE 05

Grass Campsite to Ryokan by the ocean – 103 km | 1060 m

Another Long Ride to Our Oceanfront Ryokan

As stage 5 begins, we set off on another challenging 103 km ride, continuing our journey along the stunning coastline of Hokkaido. The day’s route will take us through a mix of scenic ocean views, small fishing villages, and stretches of open road, offering both moments of serenity and stretches that demand focus and endurance.

With a full day of riding ahead, we will take strategic breaks to rest, hydrate, and regroup, ensuring a steady pace as we push forward. Along the way, there will be opportunities to stop for a refreshing meal, sampling more of Hokkaido’s renowned local flavors.

Our destination is a true reward for the day’s efforts—an oceanfront Ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn offering not just comfortable accommodations but a chance to fully immerse ourselves in Japan’s hospitality and customs. Here, we will unwind with a warm bath, soothing tatami rooms, and perhaps even an onsen overlooking the sea, allowing our muscles to recover as we take in the tranquil sounds of the waves.

This well-earned rest at the Ryokan by the ocean will set the perfect tone for the next stage of our cycling adventure.

16 August – STAGE 06

Ryokan by the ocean to Scenic Campsite – 87 km | 990 m

Transition to the Mountains – A Scenic Campsite Awaits

As we embark on stage 6, excitement builds—our journey is gradually shifting from the endless ocean views to the much-anticipated mountain stages. “FINALLY!”—after days of riding along the coast, a change in scenery is just what we need. The terrain will start to undulate more, offering a mix of gentle climbs and rolling hills as we begin to leave the shoreline behind and head towards the more rugged landscapes of Hokkaido’s interior.

Today’s ride covers 84 km, a slightly shorter distance than the previous two days, but the scenic beauty and evolving landscape will make it just as rewarding. Along the way, we will enjoy fresh air, expansive views, and the first glimpses of the mountainous terrain that lies ahead. We’ll take breaks to regroup and soak in the changing surroundings, allowing ourselves to fully appreciate the shift in environment.

The highlight of the day awaits at our campsite, a spectacular spot nestled in nature, offering breathtaking panoramic views—the perfect place to relax and prepare for the mountain stages ahead. As the sun sets over the landscape, we will gather for dinner at the campsite, sharing stories of the journey so far and mentally gearing up for the next chapter of our adventure.

With the mountains on the horizon and the fresh alpine air filling our lungs, tonight’s rest under the stars will be the perfect transition into the upcoming challenges!

17 August – STAGE 07

Scenic Campsite to Mountain Hotel – 52 km | 1090 m

Into the Mountains – A Short but Demanding Climb

The mountain stages begin! After days of coastal riding, today marks a thrilling transition into the heart of Hokkaido’s rugged terrain. Though the distance may seem short—just 52 km—do not be deceived! This will be a tough and demanding ride, as we tackle a 1,000-meter altitude gain, making this one of the most physically challenging days of the journey so far.

As we ascend, the scenery will undergo a dramatic transformation. Thick forests, winding mountain roads, and panoramic vistas will replace the open coastal landscapes, offering breathtaking views with each turn of the pedals. The ride will require a steady pace, endurance, and mental focus, but we will take several well-timed breaks to catch our breath, refuel, and take in the incredible surroundings.

At the summit, the toughest part of the day will be behind us, and we’ll enjoy a well-earned descent before reaching our destination—a comfortable and welcoming hotel nestled in the mountains. After the intense climb, the thought of a warm shower, a cozy bed, and perhaps even a hot onsen will be the perfect reward for our efforts.

Tonight, we rest and recover, knowing that our mountain adventure has only just begun!

18 August – STAGE 08

Mountain Hotel to Jozankei Ryokan – 92 km | 1310 m

Deep into the Mountains – A Challenging Ride to Jozankei

As stage 8 begins, we prepare for another spectacular yet demanding day of riding through Hokkaido’s mountainous heartland. The terrain continues to challenge us, with 90 km of cycling and another 1,500 meters of altitude gain, ensuring that our endurance and climbing skills are put to the test. But with each ascent, the rewards will be greater—stunning views, untouched wilderness, and the satisfaction of conquering the mountains.

The route will take us through winding roads lined with dense forests, offering moments of solitude and breathtaking beauty. Along the way, we’ll pass by cascading waterfalls, where we can stop for a quick break to admire the rushing waters and take in the refreshing mountain air. Further along, the presence of natural hot springs reminds us of the geothermal activity that defines this region—offering a taste of what awaits us at our destination.

After a long day of climbing and descending, we will finally arrive in Jozankei, one of Hokkaido’s most renowned hot spring towns, famous for its therapeutic onsen, vibrant autumn foliage (in season), and stunning natural scenery. Our reward for today’s effort is a stay at a beautiful and comfortable ryokan, where we will be able to fully indulge in Japan’s traditional hospitality. A soothing soak in the onsen will ease our tired muscles, while a delicious kaiseki dinner will replenish our energy for the next day.

With the combination of rugged adventure and luxurious relaxation, today will be an unforgettable part of our journey!

19 August – STAGE 09

Jozankei Ryokan to Sapporo – 31 km | 140 m

The Final Ride – A Triumphant Arrival in Sapporo

After eight days of cycling through Hokkaido’s breathtaking landscapes, stage 9 offers a well-deserved break from the intense climbs and long distances. Good news—we get to sleep in and enjoy a leisurely breakfast! This morning is all about relaxation and reflection, as we savor the final moments of our epic journey before making our way to our grand finale.

Today’s ride is all downhill, covering a short but symbolic 31 km as we roll into Sapporo, the vibrant capital of Hokkaido. This leg of the trip is less about endurance and more about celebration, as we soak in the joy of completing an incredible adventure. With the wind at our backs and the city skyline growing closer, we’ll take our time, enjoying the smooth descent as we transition from the quiet mountain roads to the bustling energy of urban life.

As we make our glorious entrance into Sapporo, we’ll take in the sights of this dynamic city, known for its beautiful parks, lively streets, and rich cultural scene. This marks the official end of our Hokkaido expedition—but not the end of our journey through Japan!

Day off at Sapporo

A Relaxing Exploration of Sapporo

After days of intense cycling, today is all about rest, recovery, and discovery as we take a well-earned day off in the vibrant city of Sapporo. There’s no rush—just a quiet, leisurely day to soak in the unique charm of Hokkaido’s capital at our own pace.

Sapporo, known for its wide boulevards, beautiful parks, and rich culinary scene, offers the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration. We can start the day with a laid-back stroll through Odori Park, the city’s central green space, where we can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and admire the seasonal scenery. Nearby, the Sapporo TV Tower provides a fantastic panoramic view of the city, a great spot for photos to commemorate our journey.

For those who enjoy history and culture, a visit to the Hokkaido Museum or the historic Clock Tower offers insight into the region’s fascinating past. Alternatively, we can explore the lively Tanukikoji Shopping Street, a covered arcade filled with local shops, souvenirs, and cozy cafés perfect for a relaxed afternoon.

Of course, no visit to Sapporo is complete without indulging in its famous gastronomy. This is the birthplace of Sapporo ramen, a rich and hearty miso-based noodle dish that is perfect for refueling after our long ride. For those craving something local, we can visit Nijo Market, where fresh seafood—including the famed Hokkaido crab and sea urchin—is a must-try.

As the day winds down, we can gather for a celebratory evening, perhaps enjoying Sapporo’s renowned beer culture with a visit to the Sapporo Beer Museum or one of the city’s lively izakayas.

Today is all about taking it easy, appreciating our journey, and savoring the unique charm of Sapporo before we move on to our next adventure in Japan!

Farewell to Hokkaido – Transfer to the Airport & Journey’s End

As our unforgettable cycling adventure through Hokkaido comes to an end, it’s time to bid farewell to this beautiful region. After a morning of final reflections and perhaps one last stroll through Sapporo, we prepare for our transfer to the airport.

Our journey has taken us through majestic coastal roads, breathtaking mountain passes, serene countryside landscapes, and charming Japanese towns. We’ve experienced traditional ryokans, soothing onsens, and the warm hospitality of Japan, making memories that will stay with us long after we leave.

With luggage packed and hearts full, we make our way to the Airport, where we say our final goodbyes. As we board our flights, we reflect on the challenges we overcame, the breathtaking sights we witnessed, and the friendships we’ve formed along the way.

Though this chapter closes, our adventure through Japan is far from over—new journeys await, from Hiroshima to Kyoto in autumn to Kyoto to Tokyo in spring.

Willy Mulonia, expert lonely traveler and cyclist for more than 30 years. He made several solo expeditions, but the most important is without a doubt the 28,640 bike trip from Ushuaia (Patagonia) to Prudhoe Bay (Alaska). He raced in the Crocodile Trophy (Australia) in ’98 and the famous Iditarod Trail Invitational (ITI) in Alaska in 1999, 2000, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 & 2023, winning the 2025 edition, as well as many other mountain bike stage races all over the world. In 2003 he founded the bike travel agency Progetto Avventura, now renamed Project Adventure Cycling. In 2010, with the help of all the team of PA-Cycling he created the Mongolia Bike Challenge, one of the most important MTB stage race in the world. Today you can find him guiding most the tour offered by Project Adventure Cycling.
